Assessment Details

Assessment Details and Course Schedule

Important note: I will always do my best to provide thorough training and ensure students pass easily on their first attempt The Department of Transport has strict guidelines and standards for conducting Skippers Ticket assessments. I need to follow these guidelines very closely. I cannot offer a guaranteed pass but I do include free re-assessment so that students know I am conducting assessments fairly and with best intentions.

Start time: 830am

Course Duration: Between 3 to 6 hours. Quiet times such as weekdays and outside of busy summer months there will be less students (1 to 4 students) course time will be approximately 3 to 4 hours with only short toilet breaks as necessary. Weekends, holiday periods and busy summer months there will be more students (over 5 students) course time will be approximately 5 to 6 hours. If you are booked into the second round of practical training/ assessment you will need to take a break of between 45 minutes to 1.5 hours whilst other students complete their practical. You will be notified of this at the time of booking.

I am flexible with course times and arrangements. I will always do my best to run on schedule however due to varying students abilities and other factors, such as weather and traffic, training and assessment times can vary.

Theory

It is important to do your homework before the day. Please read the Skippers Ticket Workbook https://www.transport.wa.gov.au/imarine/rst-workbook-and-quizzes.asp and make sure you do the Skippers Tickets Now practice quizzes https://www.skippersticketsnow.com.au/practice-quizzes/ The Skippers Tickets Now practice quizzes have been designed to help you lock in the knowledge for the theory test. Completing these quizzes will give you the best chance of success on the day!

You must pass your theory test before you can do your practical assessment.

Briefing and Theory Revision (40 minutes): I will conduct a briefing of the Recreational Skippers Ticket course and a presentation on the Skippers Ticket theory. The theory revision is focused on ensuring you understand the important parts of the workbook and have the best chance of passing the theory test. I will go over any parts of the book that you were confused/unsure about and go over important information in the workbook. There is a lot of information in the Skippers Ticket workbook, too much to include in a single presentation. The theory presentation is intended to be revision. It is important that you study the Skippers Ticket workbook and do the Skippers Tickets Now practice quizzes before the day.

Theory Assessment (1 hour)– this is a 40 question multiple choice test; you need a score of 34 out of 40 to pass (85%). You have up to 1 hour to complete this test but it usually only takes 20 minutes to complete.

If you don’t pass on your first attempt at the theory test you can have a second attempt on the same day. I will go over your incorrect answers and do more revision before your second attempt. Only 2 attempts at the theory test are allowed on the same day. If you need to take a second attempt at the theory test it is a different version of the test not the exact same test repeated. If you get less than 30 correct answers on your first attempt then you are not allowed another attempt on the same day. Re-assessment of the theory test is done free of charge up to a maximum of 4 attempts over 2 days. The theory test is strictly a closed book test, no notes allowed and no answers given during the test. In some circumstances you may need to take a break of approximately 30 minutes whilst other students redo their theory test.

Practical Training Presentation (20 minutes)– I will conduct a detailed presentation of the tasks required for the Skippers Ticket practical assessment. This will include a thorough explanation of each task, how and why each step is done. This will provide you with important knowledge on all aspects of the Recreational Skippers Ticket practical. In small groups (4 or less students) the practical presentation will be incorporated into the practical training session.

Practical Training Session (45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on group size): During this session you will be able to familiarise yourself with the operation of the boat and practice all the tasks so that you are ready to undertake the practical assessment. My training will be focused on making sure you are confident in operating the boat and making it easy to remember the required steps for the assessment.

Practical Assessment– (15 minutes) You will be assessed on your ability to safely perform all of the 11 tasks and 62 criteria (don’t worry you won’t have to remember 62 things off the top of your head in reality it is much simpler than that). You need to get a minimum score of 56 out of 62 criteria (6 wrong or less) to pass. Only one attempt at the practical is allowed in one day, if you do not pass the practical you may come back for additional training and 1 more attempt free of charge on another day.

I always do my best to ensure students pass easily on their first attempt. Re-assessment of the theory and practical test will be done at a time and place of my choosing. I am however very flexible and will try to make the arrangements that are suitable to each student.

Once you have passed the Theory and practical assessments you will be issued with an interim certificate which is your proof of being a legal Recreational Skipper so that you can go legally skipper a boat immediately. You will then be issued with a Skippers Ticket card from the Department of Transport, the cards usually take quite a while to reach you sometimes up to 2 to 3 months.
